Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.

While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.

The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant.

You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.

Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.

Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.

The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees. “We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.

41. How are social robots different from household robots?

A. They can control their emotions.B. They are more like humans.

C. They do the normal housework.D. They respond to users more slowly.

42. What can a Jibo robot do according to Paragraph 3?

A. Communicate with you and perform operations.

B. Answer your questions and make requests.

C. Take your family pictures and deliver milk.

D. Obey your orders and remind you to take pills.

43. What can Oshbot work as?

A. A language teacher. B. A tour guide.

C. A shop assistant.D. A private nurse.

44. We can learn from the last paragraph that social robots will ______.

A. train employeesB. be our workmates

C. improve technologies D. take the place of workers

45. What does the passage mainly present?

A. A new design idea of household robots.

B. Marketing strategies for social robots.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.

In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.

There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers

W: Michael, I heard your jazz band is going to be playing at the Student Center, and I’m just calling to let you know I’ll be there.

M: Oh, thanks, but I’m not in the band any more. In fact, I’m not in a group at all right now.

W: That’s too bad-you’re such a talented musician. Why did you leave the group?

M: I just couldn’t be a full-time student and still practice with the band every night. I also missed a couple of performances during my midterm exams, and I thought I’d better quit before the bandleader fired me.

W: Hey, you know my friend Charlie, don’t you? He plays the piano. He and some of his friends are getting a band together and they need a good singer. M: I wouldn’t have time for that, either.

W: Oh, I don’t think they’ll practice very often. Charlie and his friends are all students, too. I’ll give you his number, and you can get in touch with him. M: OK, thank you very much.

W:Why do you say that?

W:By the way, what’s your major? M:Hotel management.

W:What do you want to do once you graduate?

M:Uh...I haven’t decided for sure, but I think I’d like to work for a hotel. How about you? W:Well, when I first started college, I wanted to major in French, but I realized I might have a hard

time finding a job using the language, so I changed my major to computer science.

M:Do you have a part-time job to support yourself through school?

W:Well, fortunately for me, I’ve got a four-year scholarship. How about you?

M:I work three times a week at a restaurant near the campus.

(Text 7) M:The place looks so different. W:Well, you’ve been away a long time. What is it...ten years?

M:Fifteen years. W:It’s a long time.

M:I know. Look at that open space over there. That used to be the movie theater, didn’t it?

W:The movie theater? It was knocked down last year. M:Oh, I remember when we used to go there for the kids shows on Saturday mornings. Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, the old cartoons. W:Yeah.

M:I’ve got some happy memories of that place.

W:Well, you should have been it a few years ago. It was dirty ; the seats were old; nobody wanted to go there anymore.M:Really?

W:Yeah. They’re building a big new one on the other side of town now. English screens, armchair seats, armchair seats, top-class sound system. M:Wow.

W:Yeah, it’s going to be much better. M:Well, that’s progress, I guess.

(Text 8) Good morning, everyone, and thank you for your interest in the program at our Teen Training Centre. First, I’d like to take you through the classes available.

gives classes in ballet on Wednesday evenings and in modern dance on Thursday evenings. Jim usually takes the football practice sessions, but this year he will be running the basketball club on Saturday afternoons. We think this will be very popular. Steve will now run the football practice. We also have a skating course for beginners, and this will be taken by Kelly, who was last year’s London skating champion, so you’ll be in good hands with her expert advice. W:Why did you busy so many things when you have to walk back home from the store?

M:Well, I didn’t intend to buy a lot. But I’m having some people over and I guess I needed more thanI expected.

W:What’s the occasion?

M:Now the people I live with, the Browns, have been on vacation for a mouth and I thought I’d

surprise them. I’m inviting some of their friends for a welcome-home dinner.

W:Oh, that’s really thoughtful of you.

M:I figure it’s the least I can do for them. They’ve been letting me stay with them rent-free while I’m in school. They’ve been such a big help to me.

W:Really? That’s pretty kind of them.

(Text 7) M:Good morning, City Museum. Can I help you?

W:Oh yes. Good morning. I’m interested in the children ’s workshops and I’d like a litter more information, please.

M:Sure. As you probably know, the workshops run every Saturday and the children do painting and make models there.

W:Fine.And what about ages?

M:Well, all ages from five upwards are welcome, though we do ask that children below eight years old are accompanied by an adult.

W:That wouldn’t be a problem. What about the cost? M:Well, I think you’ll find it very reasonable. It’s $12a child. For two or more children from the same family, you get $2 off each.

W:Oh, yes, very reasonable. And are they held in the museum?

M:Not exactly. They’re nearby.

W:Could you give me the full address? I don’t know the area very well.

M:Yes, it’s Winter House. W:Right.

M:And that’s in Tamer Street. W:Lovely. Thanks!

(Text 8) Good afternoon, everyone. I’m so glad to be back to the university to give you a talk. First, I’d like to share how I started my career in journalism. When I was sixteen, I worked in a café every Saturday and Sunday. That was really difficult. When I was eighteen, I was a cook in a fast-food restaurant for a few months. The manager wasn’t very nice and the job was boring and badly paid. But the experiences have benefited me a lot of. After university, I was a marketing assistant for four years. It was okay but it wasn’t very interesting. Then I was an office manager. That was good, but it was always the same. I like differences, so I turned to journalism. It’s different every day. I’m often on planes or trains and in hotels and offices around the world and I meet lots of interesting people. It’s a great job, really. So, folks, you’ll never know what job suits you until you’ve tired it. Next...(fade out)
