Mass media outlets such as television and magazines expose people to the age of information. Yet, like many other things, the media are double-edged.
As channels of information, radio, TV and magazines are convenient and economical sources of knowledge and entertainment. Moreover, they also provide important information about different products through advertising. However, advertising can be misleading. Sometimes advertisements do not provide all the information we need to know about a product, and some even seduce us into buying useless or fake products.
Nevertheless, it is difficult to weigh the merits and demerits of mass media since they are often closely related to each other. For instance, violent scenes in TV programs are believed to be partially responsible for violence-related crimes. However, these programs show us not only crime, but also the punishment for wrongdoing. The dark side of society will not disappear just because we do not talk about it. But, it is certain that such information as pornography must be kept away from young people.
Hence, the media should not be simply judged as good or bad; it lies for us to use information properly.
