Emergencies (紧急情况) don?t happen very often. But when they do, you want to get help first. No one wants to spend time looking up the phone numbers.

In 1568, the Untied States government wanted one number that people could call for emergencies. They decided that 911 was easy to remember and people could dial it quickly. The very first 911 call was made on February 16, 1968, in Alabama. Today, 911 is used for emergencies in most parts of the United States and many parts of Canada.

Other countries may use other numbers. In Great Britain, it?s 959. If you?re not sure which emergency number is used in your area, check your phone book.

When to call

Never call 911 as a joke or just to see what might happen. The only time you should call 911 is when a person is badly hurt or in danger right now! so call when ether is a fire, a car accident, or sudden sickness, etc.

When in an emergency call

When you dial the 911 operator (接线员), it?s always OK to give out your information. Speak slowly and clearly when you explain what?s happening. What happened? Where are you? Who needs help?

Don’t hang up (挂断)!

If you have to call 911, do not hang up until the operator tells you it?s OK to do so, That way, you can be sure that the operator has all the information to offer help fast.

Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.

Sometimes, the word “green” means young, fresh and growing. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or an ox whose horns (角) had not yet developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today---a person who is new in a job.

Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb (大拇指). The expression comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well. The Green Revolution (绿色革命) is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. It was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs.

Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling. Jealousy (嫉妒). The green eyed monster is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants.

In most places in the world, a green light is a signal (信号) to move ahead. In everyday speech, a green light means approval (赞成) to continue with a project.

What will the car be like in the future? Maybe we can sit in a car that can drive itself. About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to develop self-driving cars (无人驾驶汽车). The most famous recent one was made by Google in 2009. There are cameras and radars (雷达) on the top of the car. They allow the computer in the car to draw a 3D map of the environment. Chinese scientists have also successfully developed a self-driving car. The car made a trip from Changsha to Wuhan.

Is a self-driving car safe? A recent study shows that robots make safer drivers than humans. If only 10% of cars on the street are self-driving, they will save 1,000 lives (生命) every year. If 90% of vehicles (交通工具) are self-driving, 21,700 lives will be saved a year. However, a self-driving car is expensive and each costs about $100,000. So it is impossible to be very popular in the near future.

It is a cold and dry winter morning. When you wake up, you feel that your throat hurts. You begin to sneeze and later you may cough. You must have a cold! Wait a moment. Could it just be a common cold or the flu (流感) that‘s been going around?

A cold gives you a runny nose and cough. But it‘s usually easy to deal with. Some take medicine while others drink herbal tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a week.

On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you fever. Sometimes it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million people from 1918 to 1919.

Don‘t worry. If you get a flu vaccine (疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus (病毒). Flu vaccines work by giving the body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop antibodies (抗体). So next time you get the flu, the antibodies should help you.

The flu virus changes every few years. Therefore, there are so many types of flu, such as H1N1 and H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu can‘t help us against all types of flu. That‘s why we need to get the vaccine every year.

However, good health habits may also help stop you developing a cold or flu. Washing your hands often helps stop you from getting viruses. It is also important to get regular exercise and eat healthy food. All these can help you strengthen your immune system (增强免疫系统).

根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

36. If you have a common cold, usually you‘ll feel better after ________.

Having a cheetah as a pet in the house? Does it sound scary to you? But for a family in South Africa, one cheetah is treated as a VIP (Very Important Person) in the house.

The big cheetah is named Jolie, after the film star Angelina Jolie. She can often be found eating from the kitchen table, taking a short sleep on the sofa, or even sleeping on Lucy and Jeff‘s bed. The big cat also sleeps and plays with the Browns‘ other pet, the more usual one — a sheepdog (牧羊犬). Having a cheetah as a pet is unusual. At first, Mrs Brown wasn‘t willing to keep a cheetah as a pet. She said, ―But we are now happy that we did it — she is part of the family.‖

Just like her name, four-year-old Jolie has achieved a celebrity status (名人地位) in the Browns‘ hometown. Fans often come to their home to take pictures of her.

However, a cheetah is always a cheetah. ―She makes a lot of mess in the house, urinating (小便) everywhere and chewing everything. It‘s her wild instincts (本能),‖ said Mrs Brown.

There might be some problems of having a cheetah as a pet in the house, but some unusual fun must also be waiting ahead.

Do you know something about the Akuapem people? They live in eastern Ghana (加纳), where the sunshine hugs all the time. They are very friendly. Now let‘s have a look at how the Akuapem people receive a visitor.

A visitor is often welcomed warmly in a family of Akuapem. After the visitor is welcomed into the house, he is offered a seat and water at the very beginning, for the host (主人) thinks that the visitor must have come from a very long trip and is in need of water. Then the host family greet the visitor by saying ―Akwaaba.‖ More interestingly, if there is a group of visitors, the host will greet the visitors from right to left. And the host shakes only with his right hand, because the left hand is regarded dirty according to the Akuapem people.

Next, the visitor is asked how his trip was and why he has come. While the conversation is going on, the wife and children, especially girls, are cooking food for the visitor. The visitor can choose the food. After the visitor has finished eating, the host and the visitor continue their

There are lots of stories about whales, but perhaps the most famous story is Moby Dick, which was written by an American writer named Heman Melville. In the book,a sailor named Captain Ahab spends a lot of time trying to find and kill enormous white whale named Moby Dick.

Sadly, there are not many kinds of whales left.People have killed the for food and other things for thousands of years. However, there are now laws to stop people killing most kinds of whales. So perhaps there will be more of them in years to come.
