1、What I Have Lived For Bertrand Russell Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed mylife: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearablepity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deepocean of anguish, reaching to the verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy --- ecstasyso great that I would have sacrificed all the rest of life for a fewhours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relievesloneliness --- that terrible loneliness in which one shiveringconsciousness looks over the rim of the world into cold unfathomablelifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union oflove I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision ofthe heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what Isought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this iswhat --- at last --- I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished tounderstand the hearts of men, I have wished to know why the starsshine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by whichnumber holds away above the flux. A little of this, but not much, Ihave achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upwardtoward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoesof cries of pain reverberated in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burdento their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and painmake a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate theevil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and I wouldgladly live it again if the chance were offered to me.

2、Man Is Here For The Sake of Other MenAlbert EinsteinStrange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for ashort visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine apurpose.

From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing wedo know that man is here for the sake of other men --- above all forthose upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, andalso for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we areconnected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day I realize how muchmy own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellowmen, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself inorder to give in return as much as I have received. My peace of mindis often troubled by the depressing sense that I have borrowed tooheavily from the work of other men.

To ponder interminably over the reason for one’s own existence orthe meaning of life in general seems to me, from an objective pointof view, to be sheer folly. And yet everyone holds certain ideals bywhich he guides his aspiration and his judgment. The ideals whichhave always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living aregoodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort and happinesshas never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basiswould be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.

3、Work and PleasureWinston ChurchillTo be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least twoor three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use startinglate in life to say:―I will take an interest in this or that.‖Suchan attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man mayacquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing whatyou like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, humanbeings may be

divided into three classes: those who are toiled todeath, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored

todeath. It is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with ahard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game offootball or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use invitingthe politician or the professional or business man, who has beenworking or worrying about serious things for six days, to work orworry about trifling things at the weekend.

It may also be said that rational, industrious useful human beingsare divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work andwhose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work andpleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They havetheir compensations. The long hours in the office or the factorybring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and mostmodest forms. But Fortune’s favoured children belong to the secondclass. Their life is a natural harmony. For them the working hoursare never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidayswhen they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbingvocation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, ofa change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential.

Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure arethose who most need the means of banishing it at intervals fromtheir minds.

4、An IllusionWilliam S. MaughamIt is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those whohave lost it; but the young know they are wretched, for they arefull of the truthless ideals which have been instilled into them, and each time they come in contact with the real they are bruisedand wounded. It looks as if they were victims of a conspiracy; forthe books they read, ideal by the necessity of selection, and theconversation of their elders, who look back upon the past through arosy haze of forgetfulness, prepare them for an ueal life.

They must discover for themselves that all they have read and allthey have been told

are lies, lies, lies; and each discovery isanother nail drivens into the body on the cross of life. The strangething is that each one who has gone through that bitterdisillusionment add to it in his turn,, unconsciously, by the powerwithin him which is stronger than himself.―――――――――――一种错觉威廉.

5、The Wholeness of LifeAnonymousOnce a circle missed a wedge. The circle wanted to be whole, so itwent around looking for its missing piece. But because it wasincomplete and therefore could roll only very slowly, it admired theflowers along the way. It chatted with worms. It enjoyed thesunshine. It found lots of different pieces, but none of them fit.

So it left them all by the side of the road and kept on searching.

Then one day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly. It was sohappy. Now it could be whole, with nothing missing. It incorporatedthe missing piece into itself and began to roll. Now that it was aperfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to notice flowersor talk to the worms. When it realized how different the worldseemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, left its found pieceby the side of the road and rolled slowly away.

The lesson of the story, I suggested, was that in some strangesense we are more whole when we are missing something. The man whohas everything is in some ways a poor man. He will never know whatit feels like to yearn, to hope, to nourish his soul with the dreamof something better. He will never know the experience of havingsomeone who loves him give him something he has always wanted ornever had.

There is a wholeness about the person who has come to terms withhis limitations, who has been brave enough to let go of hisuealistic dreams and not feel like a failure for doing so. Thereis a wholeness about the man or woman who has learned that he or sheis strong enough to go through a tragedy and survive, she can losesomeone and still feel like a complete person.

Life is not a trap set for us by God so that he can condemn us forfailing. Life is not a spelling bee, where no matter how many wordsyou’ve gotten right, you’re disqualified if you make one mistake.

Life is more like a baseball season, where even the best team losesone third of its games and even the worst team has its days ofbrilliance. Our goal is to win more games than we lose. When weaccept that imperfection is part of being human, and when we cancontinue rolling through life and appreciate it, we will haveachieved a wholeness that others can only aspire to. That, Ibelieve, is what God asks of us --- not ―Be perfect‖, not ―Don’teven make a mistake‖, but ―Be whole‖.

If we are brave enough to love, strong enough to forgive, generousenough to rejoice in another’s happiness, and wise enough to knowthere is enough love to go around for us all, then we can achieve afulfillment that no other living creature will ever know.

6、The Two RoadsJohn RuskinIt was New Year’s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. Heraised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the starswere floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake.

Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people thanhimself now moved towards their certain goal --- the tomb. He hadalready passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had broughtfrom his journey nothing but errors and remorse. Now his health waspoor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short ofcomforts. The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and herecalled the serious moment when his father placed him at theentrance of the two roads --- one leading to a peaceful, sunnyplace, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweetsongs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonoussnakes hissed and crawled.

He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, ―O youth, return! Omy father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I’llchoose the better way!‖ But both his father and the days of hisyouth had passed away.

He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were thedays of his wasted life; he saw a star fall down from the sky anddisappeared, and this was the symbol of himself.

This morning, when I first caught sight of the unfamiliar whitened world, I could not help wishing that we had snow oftener, that English winters were more wintry.

How delightful it would be, I thought, to have months of clean snow and a landscape sparkling with frost instead of innumerable grey featureless days of rain and raw winds.

I began to envy my friends in such places as the Eastern States of America and Canada, who can count upon a solid winter every year and know that the snow will arrive by a certain date and will remain, without degenerating into black slush, until Spring is close at hand. To have snow and frost and yet a clear sunny sky and air as crisp as a biscuit - this seemed to me happiness indeed.

And then I saw that it would never do for us. We should be sick of it in a week. After the first day the magic would be gone and there would be nothing left but the unchanging glare of the day and the bitter cruel nights.

It is not the snow itself, the sight of the blanketed world, that is so enchanting, but the first coming of the snow, the sudden and silent change.Out of the relations, for ever shifting and unanticipated,of wind and water comes a magical event.

Who would change this state of things for a steadily recurring round,an earth governed by the calendar? It has been well said that while other countries have a climate, we alone in England have weather. There is nothing duller than

climate, which can be converted into a topic only by scientists and hypochondriacs.

But weather is our earth's Cleopatra, and it is not to be wondered at that we, who must share her gigantic moods, should be for ever talking about her. Once we were settled in America, Siberia, Australia, where there is nothing but a steady pact between climate and the calendar,we should regret her very naughtinesses, her willful pranks, her gusts of rage, and sudden tears.

1

English Language

I m interested in English. English is a very important language. It is widely used all over the world. If you travel around the world, you’ll find English everywhere. It is widely used for business between different countries. If you know English, you can enjoy many books. It s really a bridge to much knowledge.

I have learned many English words. I hope I can talk with foreigners in English and let them know our country better. Some people say the world is smaller than before.

2

An Unforgettable Challenge

When I was ten years old, I began to chat with foreigners. But I was very shy. Gradually, I became more and more confident with foreigners’ help. The following year, I went to Yangzhou with two foreigners. I became their guide. First, we came into the Shouxi River. They wanted to look around the river by boat. I told them the price. Then we got into the boat. When we looked out at the sight, we all felt very beautiful. After that, they went to buy souvenirs. The sellers couldn’t speak English. Though it was very hard, I tried my best to listen to their words carefully and translate the sentences. They bought some souvenirs with my help. Next, we went to a small zoo, and we took some photos. There were not many animals. When we felt hungry, we went out and had lunch. After lunch, we visited some old houses. They learned more about Chinese history.

This wasn’t only a big challenge but also an unforgettable challenge. This opportunity made me confident and brave.I hope I can catch many opportunities in the future, then I can speak English, because I think practice makes perfect.

3

My Dreams

I want to be a teacher when I listen to my teacher carefully. I think I can be a teacher when I grow up. I can help many students learn things well. I can play with my students, too. So we are good friends. I want to be a doctor when I see many doctors save their patients. To be a doctor is really great. I think I can be a doctor when I grow up. Then I can help many people out of danger. I will be the happiest girl in the world. I want to be a reporter when I watch TV every evening. We can get lots of important information from them. They make the world smaller and also make us happy. I would like to be a reporter when I

grow up. And I can learn a lot about China and the other countries around the world. I can meet many superstars as well.I have lots of dreams. I think my dreams can come true one day, because there’s an old saying “where there is a will, there is a way.”

4

My school day

Hi, I’m xxx. I'm 14 years old and I study in Laoshan School. My school is not very big. Every morning I get up at seven and have breakfast. And then I go to school at half past seven. At eight twenty, we begin our morning reading. Lessons begin at nine o’clock. We have four lessons in the morning and Chinese is my favourite lesson. We usually have 10 minute's break between two lessons and at about 12:30 we finish our morning lessons. I have lunch at school at twelve thirty, too. I like school lunch and I always have rice with meat and vegetables. After lunch I often talk with my friends or play basketball with them. In the afternoon lessons start at half past one and finish at four thirty. I play games after school with my friends and then go home at five. In the evening I do my homework and then watch TV. At ten o’clock I go to bed. It’s really a busy day but I like it.

5

Healthy eating

My name is xxx. I am 14 years old. I want to be a doctor when I grow up. To be a doctor, I must be healthy. It is important for a doctor to be healthy.

Before, I seldom ate vegetables. Because I disliked vegetables. I liked sweet snacks. They taste delicious but they are not good for me. They give me energy but they are not healthy. So I must change my diet. Now, I eat a bowl of rice for breakfast, and I often eat an egg. For lunch, I usually eat a bowl of soup, vegetables and a bowl of rice. I eat meat and vegetables for dinner. If I want to be healthier, I must exercise. So I changed my lifestyle. Now, I often exercise once a week. I do not eat snacks or fast food any more. So I think I am healthy. And I am very happy. I hope everybody is healthy and happy.

6

Eating taste

People in different parts of our country have very different ideas about what is good to eat. In our country, for example, people from the south like to eat rice, however, people living in the north prefer bread or noodles. The people of Hunan or Sichuan enjoy hot food. But people of Shanghai or Suzhou will choose sweet dish.

Even if people live in the same part of the country, their tastes may be very

different. Old people and young ones have different tastes; men and women also have their different preferences. In a restaurant, some customers order soups that is thick and heavy, while others drink soup that is thin and clear. A few people only eat vegetables. They don’t like fish or chicken.

Therefore, it is not easy for restaurants to satisfy the needs of all the customers. To increase their business, the restaurants in the cities try their best to make foods in different kinds and different styles. They sometimes add new names of dishes with different tastes to their menus for customers.

7

Protect our environment

As we all know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse .In some places we can’t see fish swimming in the river or trees on the hills. Some people even have no clean water to drink. So I think we must do something to

. .But what can we do? How to protect our environment? In fact, there are many things we can do. Firstly, we can go to school on foot or by bike and don’t throw rubbish everywhere. Secondly, we can use shopping baskets but not plastic bags when we go shopping. Last but not least, we can use both sides of the paper when we write. In a word, if everyone pays more attention to our environment, there will be less pollution and our life will be better.

“There is only one earth”, we should act at once. I hope everyone will protect our environment well.

8

Water

Water is very important for living things. Without water there can be no life on earth. All animals and plants need water. Man also needs water.

Water is found almost everywhere. Even in the driest part of the world

there is some water in the air.

As we all have found out, water may be a solid, or a liquid or a gas. When it is a solid, it may be as hard as stone, When it’s a liquid, you can pour it out of a container. When it is a gas, you cannot see or feel it.

Although about 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water, there are many places in the world still running out of water. So we should make good use of water on earth.

9

Be brave to the earthquake

Everyone has some unforgettable experiences. An earthquake

happened in Sichuan Province on Monday, May 12, 2008. It is the most

dangerous earthquake in Chinese history. Many people were killed. A large number of houses fell down. I was shocked. When I see theses picture on TV, my eyes were filled with tears.

Now, more and more people and volunteers go to disaster area to help people who are in trouble. I was moved. I wanted to do something for people in the disaster areas, too. I thought although I couldn’t go to Sichuan like the soldiers and the doctors, I still wanted to try my best to help them. I took out all my pocket money and threw it into the donation box.

I hope they can rebuild their homeland early. I believe that if every-one makes a contribution for our country, we can overcome any difficulties.

10

Freedom and Peace

Almost everyday we can see there are always a huge number of pigeons enjoying the sunbath in some large squares, but do you often care what a white pigeon stands for? That is peace.

For hundreds of years, people always regard pigeons as a represent of freedom and peace. That is because of not only its lovely pure figure, but also its great passion to the outside world. Till now, I still can't help thinking of such a picture: In Iraq, a boy was watching a white pigeon over his head. The background was full of wounded solders and guns. Thus, this lovely white pigeon was contrastive to this iced background and gave people a deep consideration. Suddenly, a thought comes into my mind: Why there have been so many wars in the world just for someone's own interest? Why can't people live like as mall pigeon with freedom? I hope there will not be wars,

FOREVER!
