Why do smart, articulate, and self-confident people often become terrified in front of a group? How could death rank just seventh in a national survey of the toy ten experiences Americans dread most, and public speaking first? Think about it :We'd rather kick the bucket than address an audience!

It starts in elementary school when a teacher singles us out to “speak up.”Remember the panic of producing the wrong answer? Our palms sweated, we might have been short of breath , and filled with trembling knees, nausea, a stomachache, and a rapid heartbeat. We felt awkward and dumb.

As adults, we're still afraid we'll make fools of our-selves. We worry that listeners we'll think we are lightweights. And we should worry.

Public speaking isn't just a sweet skill to have. Being a first-rate orator can lead to job promotions and personal advancement, while being a lousy one is a dis-advantage.

One way to feel more comfortable on the stage is by checking out the room in advance, observing the set-up, and testing any equipment you'll be using.

Some speaking specialists suggest opening with a provocative question, or a recent news event that relates to your topic. Other coaches think adding a little tasteful humor can liven up the talk if the subject is suitable .

As important as the words is the delivery. A study of audience reaction to speeches revealed that listeners remember just 7 percent of what is said, 38% of how it is said, and 55% of the speaker's body language.

And speaking of anxiety, some people like to get up in front of a group, but most don't. As Mark Twain once said. “There are two kinds of speakers: those that nervous and those that are liars.”

Speaking Effective American English

On job interviews when first conversing with an individual and when addressing small or large groups, the first few seconds are critical in setting the tone for how you'll be perceived. If she has an annoying regional accent, uses incorrect grammar, has a limited vocabulary, and if she has an irritatingly sharp piercing voice, sounds whiny or bossy or doesn't articulate her words clearly, it's an immediate turn-off. This isn't someone who you would hire or proudly introduce to your friends and business associates. This doesn't mean that everyone should try to sound like a professional actor or broadcaster. All of us have qualities unique to our own way of speaking, our individual voice print as distinctive as our fingerprints. Our voice is very personal and an important part of our identity. Some natural characteristics of our voice may be very appealing.

The idea is to take the voice with which you've been gifted and give it the very best sound that you can. With the right type of practice, by paying attention to the quality of your voice and by knowing how to properly express yourself, you'll almost immediately improve your opportunities in job interviews, social situations, in selling, and in running meeting or addressing groups of people.

Let's say it again, it all begins with the instrument, your voice. If its sound and quality is flawed and needs improvement, that's where you start. That's what everyone hear whether in casual conversation or in making a major speech to a lager audience. Pure vowel sounds, articulation, proper breathing, expressive speaking patterns, a pleasing vocal, naturalness, all these are square two.

Preparation for an Interview

Frequently Asked Questions in an Interview

1. What can you tell me about yourself? "

This is not an invitation to give your life history.the

interviewer is looking for clues about your character, qualifications, ambitions, and motivations. The following is a good example of a positive response. “In high school I was involved in competitive sports and I always tried to improve in each sport I participated in. As a college student, I worked in a clothing store part-time and found that I could sell things easily. The sale was important, but for me, it was even more important to make sure that the customer was satisfied. It was not long before customer came back to the store and specifically asked for me to help them. I'm very competitive and it means a lot to me to be the best.”

2.“Why do you want to work for us?"

This is an obvious question and, if you have done your research on the company, you school be able to give a good reason.Organize your reasons into several short sentences that clearly spell out your interest.“You are a leader in the field of electronics. Your company is a Fortune 500 Company. Your management is very progressive.”

3.“Why should I hire you ?”

Once again, you should not be long winded, but you should provide a summary of your qualifications. Be positive and show that you are capable of doing the job.“Based on the internships that I have participated in and the related part-time experiences I have had,I can do the job.”

4.“How do you feel about your progress to date?”

Never apologize for what you have done.“I think I did well in school. In fact, in a number of courses I received the hightest exam scores in the class.”“As an intern for the X Company, I received some of the hightest evaluations that had been given in years."

Summer Jobs

Student returning to their campuses in the fall never have any lack of things to talk about. Among US undergrads one of the main topics is summer jobs. Young people happily spend many hour relating and comparing their summer experiences of travel, study or employment. Getting a job is by far the most common way to spend the summer, but travel is also a frequent choice, sometimes to Europe, for instance, for all three months, or sometimes around America for a month either before or after a couple of months of employment.

Most young Americans have held at least one part-time or seasonal job before entering college. For instance, my own (altogether typical)job history began, if you don't count the daily and weekly chores my parents set for me from the age of six, when I was fourteen, bagging groceries part-time in a supermarket.(An American mother buying food for her household usually makes one big shopping expedition a week, not many little trips in the Chinese manner. In order to keep the lines at checkout counters moving along briskly,a bagger has to be on hand to put her purchases in, on average, eight to twelve sturdy brown paper bags before she can wheel them out to the family car.) During the summer of my fifteenth year I worked 25 hour a week at a golf-driving range, renting our equipment, keeping the toilet spick-and-span and retrieving golf-balls. During the following summer, as I was preparing to head off to Yale,I got a job working full-time on a grounds maintenance crew. This meant doing lawn and garden chores, and mopping and cleaning industrial buildings. The money I earned, no vast sum of course, as one is paid the minimum wage for this sort of physical slog, went into a bank account to be drawn upon for pocket money at school. Quite a few kids toil to buy a used car or keep gas in one, as the majority of Americans lose no time in getting a driver's licence soon after their sixteenth birthday.

My undergraduate year witnessed many further stages in this inglorious but useful history, as I worked in a factory, a restaurant, a swimming pool, a library, a college dining hall and a hospital, seldom for much above the minimum wage. Summer for me, as for countless other young Americans, were times of new faces, new places,

new accent, new views, new books and films, and of the new perspectives on life that come from working alongside diverse people in jobs where employees are under pressure to get things done. Such a life, for the observant, becomes a bit like a series of novels in which a quiet begging can lead suddenly to spiritual adventure or amazing discovery.

It also strikes me now, year later, how often people who landed summer jobs much better, in theory, than mine-jobs that paid more or brought the young employee into a prestigious milieu-did not benefit as much in the personal sense, although to be fair I must admit that those other jobs did often lead them on to prominent careers. Another remarkable thing is

how many people avoided bad career choices thanks to the experience, often wretched, provided by a lousier job. Experience in what one makes of it,and lessons of the greatest moment can be learned in the oddest and least glamorous of circumstances.
