The latest version of Google‘s self-driving car—a pod-like two-seater that needs no gas pedal or steering wheel—will make its first appearance on public roads this summer, a significant step in the technology giant‘s mission to have driverless cars available to consumers in the next five years. It can drive, brake and recognize road dangers without human involvement. Google says the car is the first vehicle built for the purpose of self-driving.

However, the new vehicle is not designed for long trips. It lacks air bags and other safety devices required by the federal government. It cannot go more than 25 miles per hour. The vehicle is electric and has to be recharged after 80 miles. And it can only drive in areas that have been thoroughly mapped by Google.

Current California laws require all vehicles to have a steering wheel to guide the car and a gas pedal to control fuel use. The laws also require a driver to be able to take back control of a vehicle at any time. But, Google is working to change those laws.

Google will first build and test 25 driverless vehicles, mostly in neighborhoods surrounding its Mountain View headquarters. It eventually will build between 50 and 100, and will broaden testing to sites that are hillier and rainier.

The final goal, says Google co-founder Sergey Brin, is computer-controlled cars that can get rid of human error, which is a factor in an estimated 90 percent of the 1.2 million road deaths that occur worldwide each year. Self-driving cars also could improve traffic jam and transport the elderly and disabled.

Convincing drivers that driverless technology is safe is one of the difficulties the company must overcome. Earlier this week, in response to questions from the Associated Press, Google acknowledged 11 minor accidents in the six years it has been testing autonomous cars. Urmson, who directs Google ?s self-driving car project, says the company is proud of that record, and notes that Google‘s vehicles have completed more than 1.7 million miles of testing. He says all but one of the accidents were caused by drivers in other cars.

Consumers question whether they can trust self-driving cars to work all the time, says the consulting firm J.D. Power and Associates. In a 2013 survey of U.S. drivers, J.D. Power found only one in five was interested in a fully autonomous car.

Google isn‘t alone in developing self-driving cars. Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti and other brands already have advanced driver assistance systems. Unlike Google, automakers think self-driving cars will arrive feature-by-feature instead of all at once, giving people plenty of time to adapt to autonomous driving.

But Urmson says that approach is ―fundamentally wrong.‖ ―We believe that‘s like saying, ?If I work really hard

at jumping, one day I‘ll just be able to fly,‖‖ he said.

41. According to the passage, Google‘s self-driving car ______.

A. has changed the California laws B. is equipped with safety devices

C. has limited driving areas D. can travel very fast

42. What does Google plan to do?

A. Provide free service to the elderly and disabled. B. Expand the testing areas of self-driving cars.

C. Design vehicles especially for hilly areas. D. Invest more in public transportation.

43. We can learn from Urmson‘s words that self-driving cars ______.

A. are safer than traditional cars B. need a long period of testing

C. fail to meet Google‘s requirements D. are more intelligent than humans

44. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Half of the road deaths are due to human error.

B. Google faces many technology difficulties.

C. Most people are doubtful about self-driving cars.

D. Few companies are interested in developing self-driving cars

45. Which of the following agrees with Urmson‘s idea?

A. Google should make driverless cars available soon. B. Advanced driver assistance is popular at present.

C. Flying cars may be developed in the future. D. People need time to adapt to self-driving cars.

Just what is it about roller coasters? It seems we just can’t get enough of them. This week we take a look at some of the top amusement parks and the roller coasters that have helped make them famous.

Lake Compounce

Lake Compounce, being one of America‘s more traditional parks, is a rare find indeed. The oldest continuously operating amusement park in the US, it has been a popular family spot since 1846. like many old-time parks, it fell on hard times and was in danger of being closed. Luckily, in 1977, a well-known company came to its rescue with huge infusions(注入) of cash. The transformed park with its new rides, is attracting many new fans. Don‘t expect the high-energy rush found at larger parks, though, as the lake has a more relaxed pace—a reminder of its 19th-century origins. Lake Compounce also has a great combination of rides, including the exciting Boulder Dash roller coaster. Boulder Dash is the first of its kind to be built on the side of a mountain and doesn‘t actually look like a typical roller coaster. Instead of the usual mass of wooden tracks high in the air, the ride uses the mountain as its base.

Holiday World

It is a family park in the sense that it resists the hyped-up(兴奋的) atmosphere of its competitors and instead offers a more relaxed friendly experience. Rare in that it is privately owned and it has many features that corporate parks often can‘t match. There is lots of entertainment for youngsters, so parents appreciate the park‘s family-friendly policy of free entry to the water park, reasonable food prices and unlimited soft drinks free of charge.

What‘s more, Holiday World delivers great rides. In fact, the Raven, a more traditional wooden roller coaster, ranks among the best in the world. Park president, Will Koch, who had a hand in developing the ride, says the reason Raven works so well is that it keeps riders on the edge of their seats.

Knott’s Berry Farm

One of America‘s favorite theme parks, Knott‘s has something for everyone. For those seeking a breathtaking rush, try the roller coaster, GhostRider or the Xcelerator. GhostRider is the single largest attraction in amusement park history and one of the longest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. If you‘re after something a little less exciting, go to Camp Snoopy. Or visit the heart of Knott‘s, Ghost Town, for a glance of life in the Wild West of the 1880s. with its cowboys, carriages, steam trains and historic buildings – many transported from mining towns—Ghost Town will let you relive a piece of the past.

Islands of Adventure

In the style of Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure is dived into themed ―lands‘. Unlike the sugar-coated Magic Kingdom, however, IOA features attractions guaranteed to set the heart racing. Its roller coasters are state-of-the-art(达到最新水平的) fun. While the Spiderman is fantastic, you haven‘t truly lived until you‘ve experienced The Incredible Hulk‘s wild and unique uphill launch(启动). Be warned, however, this roller coaster both terrifies and exhilarates(使感到激动) and is not for the faint of heart. Because it is located near the park‘s front entrance and is IOA‘s leading attraction, Hulk‘s queues tend to get long quickly so get in line early—if you dare.

46. What happened to Lake Compounce in the 1970s?

A. It escaped going out of business. B. It developed into a big company.

C. It built its first wooden track. D. It was built in a mountain.

47. What is special about Holiday World?

A. It owns the latest ride technology. B. It has a hyped-up atmosphere.

C. It provides free food. D. It belonged to an individual.

48. Which park takes visitors back to earlier times?

A. Lake Compounce. B. Holiday World. C. Knott‘s Berry Farm. D. Islands of Adventure.

49. Island of Adventure is different from Magic Kingdom in that ______.

A. it plays many famous movies B. it is divided into different lands

C. it has more people waiting in line D. its roller coasters are more exciting

Researchers in the US have proved a way in which city residents are unknowingly fueling the heat of the night—by using air conditioners.

Because the cities are getting hotter as the climate changes, residents are increasingly investing in air conditioning systems—which discharge heat from offices and apartment blocks straight into the city air. And the bad circle effect is that cities get still warmer, making air conditioning all the more attractive to residents.

According to scientists at Arizona State University, the air conditioning system is now having a measurable effect. During the days, the systems small. At night, heat from air conditioning systems now raises some urban temperatures by more than 1℃, they report in the Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres. The team focused on the role of air conditioning systems in the urban area of the city of Phoenix, which is in the Sonora desert in Arizona.

But, worldwide, normally warm countries are experiencing increasing extremes of heat, and conditions in cities have on occasion become deadly. To cap this, cities are unavoidably hotspots—and it‘s not just because of global warming. The concentration of traffic, commuter systems, street and indoor lighting, central heating, light industry, bricks, building activity and millions of people can raise temperatures as much as 5℃ above the surrounding countryside.

At present, 87% of US families have air conditioning, and the US—which is not one of the warmer nations—uses more electricity to keep cool than all the other countries of the world combined. To keep the people of Phoenix cool during periods of extreme heat, air conditioning systems can consume more than half of total electricity needs, which puts a pressure on power network.

The Arizona scientists simulated(模拟) a 10-day period of unusually hot weather between 10 July and 19 July, 2009, and used computer models and detailed readings from weather records to analyze the effect of air conditioning systems on local temperatures. Even though the biggest demand for air conditioning was in the daytime, they found the biggest difference was always at night.

―Our work shows 1℃ local heating of urban atmospheres in hot and dry cities due to air conditioning use at night time,‖ said Francisco Salamanca, the report‘s lead author. ―This increase in outside air temperature in turn results in additional demands for air conditioning.‖ Sustainable(可持续) development would require turning wasted heat from air conditioning into useful energy, which can be used inside houses for various purposes—including, for example, water heaters. Such actions would reduce local air temperatures: in Phoenix alone, they could directly save

A

The first two stages in the development of civilized man were probably the invention of weapons and the discovery of fire, although nobody knows exactly when he acquired the use of the latter.

The origin of language is also difficult to understand. No doubt it began very gradually. Animals have a few cries that serve as signals, but even the highest apes (猿) have not been found able to pronounce words, even with the most intensive professional instruction. The superior brain of man is apparently a necessity for the mastering of speech. When man became intelligent enough, we must suppose that he gradually increased the number of cries for different purposes. It was a great day when he discovered that speech could be used for describing and telling stories. There are those who think in this respect picture language appeared before oral language. A man could draw a picture on the wall of his cave to show in which direction he had gone, or what prey he hoped to catch. Probably picture language and oral language developed side by side. I prefer to think that language has been the most important single factor in the development of man.

Two important stages came not so long before the dawn of written history. The first was the domestication (驯化) of animals. The second was agriculture. Agriculture was a step in human progress to which there was nothing comparable until our own machine age. Agriculture made possible a huge increase in the number of the human species in the regions where it could be successfully practiced. These were, at first, only those in which nature fertilized the soil after each harvest. Agriculture met with violent resistance from the pastoral nomads (游牧民族), but the agricultural way of life was accepted in the end because of the physical comforts it provided.

Another fundamental technical advance was writing, which, like spoken language, developed out of pictures, but as soon as it had reached a certain stage, it was possible to keep records and transmit information to people who were not present when the information was given.

These inventions and discoveries—fire, speech, weapons, domestic animals, agriculture, and writing—made the existence of civilized communities possible. From about 3000 B. C. until the beginning of the Industrial

Revolution less than two hundred years ago there was no technical advance comparable to these. During this long period man had time to become accustomed to his technique, and to develop the beliefs and political organizations appropriate to it. There was, of course, a big extension in the area of civilized life. At first it had been confined to the Nile, the Euphrates, the Tigris and the Indus, but at the end of the period in question it covered much the greater part of the inhabitable (适合居住的) globe. I do not mean to suggest that there was no technical progress during this long time; there was progress—there were even two inventions of very great importance, namely gunpowder and the compass—but neither of these can be compared in their power to such things as speech and writing and agriculture.

41. According to the above passage, we can conclude that ________.

A. the use of fire and the domestication of animals made agriculture possible B. progress was probably very slow when language first came into being C. gunpowder and the compass are as important as speech in history D. communication is the most important factor for human development A. was accepted as soon as it appeared B. is as great a step forward as our machine age C. helped improve the techniques of domestication D. at first helped make the land more suitable for crops

A. weapons and agriculture are what speech and physical comforts are based on B. the origin of the language can be clearly understood by studying apes’ behaviors C. the reason why animals have no language may be that they are not clever enough D. the agricultural way of life helps a lot in the development of written language

This picture dictionary is intended to introduce children to basic words and concepts. It begins with four pages that show the mischievous monkey receiving the book as a birthday present and learning to use it. The pages that follow have six words each and include abstract ideas such as ―far,‖ ―some,‖ and ―before.‖ The definitions are provided through pictures and simple sentences (although some terms, like ―ant,‖ ―bag,‖ and ―dress,‖ have only a picture). When a word has two meanings, for example, ―can‖ and ―wave,‖ it has two entries: ―The beans are in a can‖ and ―George can paint.‖ Illustrations are done in the style of H. A. Rey’s work. This book has use as a resource to introduce the idea of a dictionary, and kids may learn some new words in the process. But from the library shelf, they’re likely to choose the traditional stories instead. My Answer is No ... If That's
