I arrived at my mother’s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt(被子)after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.

“Oh?” Mom said, “That’s Mama’s quilt.”

I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together; irregular

“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn’t look like any of the quilts she had made.

“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is what I’ve done so far.”

I looked at it more closely. She had made a crooked line straight. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched(缝) a piece of cloth with these words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn’t get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”

“Ooh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. Zxxk

It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother’s quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we wear quite out off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital.

However, I soon discovered that one big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it became of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by

bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever you tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens(十几岁)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

40. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child ?

A. Staying on the farm. B. Moving to the countryside.

C. Leaving home for the city. D. Running away from the school.

41. Which of the following is true about the writer?

A. express his opinions about way of lifeB. describe his life in the countryside

C. an interest in the outside world D. persuade the reader to live in the city

43. How is the passage mainly developed?

A. By inferring. B. By comparing. C. By listing examples. D. By discussing.

C

In the future your automobile(汽车) will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!

For each prediction that has come true today, several others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology, or if people really needed it in their lives or not. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past. Robot Helpers

Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other manufacturing environments.

Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.

Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year. During the previous year Rita had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita would be given the best job.

Each child received a normal job. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita felt disappointed. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. Even her father became very angry with the teacher and he encouraged Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest.

Rita started investigating all about her little ant and gave the ant the best food, and it grew quite a bit bigger.

One day, a man, who looked very important, came into their classroom and declared(宣布), “Your class has been chosen to accompany me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rain forest, where we will investigate(调查) all kinds of insects. Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant.”

That day the school was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone thanked Rita for

B

The US government has started a website, Admongo, to help children think critically(批判性地) about the advertising aimed at them. It claims to provide visitors with an “education” through games and other entertainment.

A cartoon man dressed in old time pilot clothing greets visitors to Admongo. "Call me Haiz", he says upon arrival in a rocket ship that opens up with a crazy world inside it. Spacey dance music plays in the background as Haiz tells visitors that they need to learn about advertising.

Its inventors say eight to twelve years old is the age kids develop their critical thinking abilities. Kids that age are also a big market for advertisers.

The idea behind Admongo is to teach children three things: To identify the advertiser. To know what the advertiser is really saying. And to know what the advertisement is trying to get the child to do.

Children learn these things through a video game. They create their own game character. They can choose different skin colors, hair styles, eye and mouth shapes. Then they begin a trip through ad-land, where there are ads on buses and billboards. The players have to find all the marketing in the neighborhood before they can move on to the next level.

The Admongo game takes players inside a home, to the advertising studio and everywhere else ads can be found. It is a complete exploration of the world of marketing.

One such area is food marketing. The Federal Trade Commission(FTC) says it is a big business. The FTC estimates that food, drink and fast-food restaurants spent more than one and a half billion dollars on advertising to young people in 2009.

The FTC says children are important for three reasons. They buy products. They influence parents and caregivers to buy. And they are the future adult buyers of the products.

A recent study says most advertising aimed at children is for foods of the lowest nutritional(营养的) value. First Lady Michelle Obama has said she would like to see advertisers marketing healthy foods for children.

A. Choose hair styles for their character. B. Travel to a supermarket.

Can you list inventions made by kids? Sometimes those inventions were actually patented (获专利) later in life when the inventors were adults, but the first idea was often put forward while they were kids.

Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle when he was just 11 years old. One night in 1905, in San Francisco, Frank mixed a fruit soft drink with soda powder and water to create a kind of drink, popular at the time. The stick he used to create the mixture was left in the glass, and the glass was left outside the entire night. When he woke up in the morning, he found the "drink" frozen to the stick after a very cold night. Though he tasted this accidental frozen creation and even showed it to others, he didn't do anything else with it at the time. It was only 18 years later, in 1923 that Frank gained a patent for the “frozen ice on a stick" and started selling it. Next time you eat a frozen treat, think about the 11-year-old boy who left his drink in the cold. Chester Greenwood was just a 15-year-old kid testing a new pair of ice skates, in cold Maine, back in 1873. His ears were cold and he tried several ways to protect them. He started to tie a scarf (围巾 ) around his head, but it was uncomfortable. He then made two circles out of wire and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. This is how the earmuffs(御寒耳罩) were invented. He improved his model and patented it under the title: improved ear protectors. He set up a company that sold his earmuffs. He later on made many other inventions, such as a tea kettle and an advertising matchbox.

36. What message does the author most want to give us in the first paragraph?

A. Kids' inventions are famous.

B. Kids probably have invention ideas.

C. Kids' inventions can't be patented.

D. Kids put forward more ideas than adults.

37. Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle mainly because_____.

A. he was fond of eating frozen creations at the age of 11

A. Because he had no scarf at that time.

B. Because his grandmother's ears hurt.

C. Because he set up a company at that time.

D. Because he had a bad experience in the cold.

40 The passage .is mainly about______.

A. inventions made by kids

B. learning from kid inventors

C. two important patents gained by kids

D. the differences between Frank and Chester

D

Getting sick overseas can be scary. You’re in an unfamiliar place and often don’t speak the language. Although each trip is different, there are universal things you can do to keep safe.

Be prepared. “Schedule a visit with a doctor who specializes in travel or the area you’re visiting at least four weeks before your departure,” says WHO public health expert Dr. Gilles Poumerol. A travel doctor will be able to give you the required and recommended vaccinations(接种疫苗) as well as discuss any medical issues you may come across abroad.

Get insurance. “In many countries where you have limited access to health care, good health care is only found in the private sector and can be very expensive,” Dr. Poumerol says. Plus, in an emergency, returning to the United States can cost more than $50,000. Ask your health insurance company whether your policy applies overseas and whether it will cover trips to a foreign hospital. If not, there are many companies that offer short-term travel health insurance for a reasonable fee. A list can be found on the US State Department’s travel website.

Pack well. Dr. Poumerol also suggests bringing a note from your doctor in English and the language of the country you’re visiting. Packing an emergency contact list is important. Contacts should include the local embassy(使馆), relatives who should be informed if you get sick and your health insurance company.

Be care. You have to be in charge of your health. If you’re being treated abroad, question the medical staff about their sterilization(杀菌) practices; injection (注射) equipment should be put in boiling water for at least 30 minutes or used only once. Also be sure that doctors and nurses are wearing gloves to prevent fluid transfer.

A simple flower made headlines in the British press last week. How could that be?

British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies(罂粟花) in their buttonholes.

What‘s wrong with that?

According to the Global Times, Chinese officials apparently had asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.

So what‘s the significance of the poppy? It‘s a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.

From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China‘s humiliation at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade – including in the opium – which was made from poppies grown in India.

Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World War I. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day (November 11) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.

So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other‘s standpoint.

Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guests from overseas. US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain‘s Queen – a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format and impossible to play on British DVD players.

Many countries have diplomats stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook the cultural significance of a small flower.

61. British Prime Minister David Cameron probably attended a reception in Beijing on ________.

A. October 1

B. November 11 C. December 31D. January 11

62. The poppy reminds the Chinese of ________.

A. the shame caused by European countries in the 19th century B. the British soldiers who were killed and buried during World War I C. the Chinese soldiers killed during World War II

D. the suffering caused by Britain during World War I

63. The diplomatic problem in Beijing is mainly caused by ________. A. the translation mistake B. the language difference C. the cultural difference

D. the different lifestyle

64. We can infer that ________.

A. Britain‘s Queen is not interested in art

B. Gordon Brown was fond of American movies US President Barack Obama sent him C. US President Barack Obama received a gift for music

D. Britain‘s Queen may not like the iPod US President Obama presented her 65. What is the main idea of the 9th paragraph? A. Cultural differences can cause a big problem B. Cultural differences can bring people amusement

C. US President Barack Obama likes to present gifts to other leaders D. US leaders and British leaders get along well with each other

Cosmo Books Ltd., 14, Woodman Road, Hertford Estate,Two Bridges, Rickmansworth,West Sussex. Middx.

25th February Dear sir,

Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the Morning Mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo books Ltd., offered this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was said to be a ?remarkable‘ price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare‘s plays and poems for some time, and these books, in red imitation leather, looked particularly attractive; so I sent for them.

Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of Charles Dickens which I had not ordered. So I returned the Dickens books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my door step a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a six book set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. However, I could not afford to post all these books back to you, so I wrote to you at the end of August of last year, instructing you to come and collect all the books that I did not want, and asking you not to send any other books until further notice.

You did not reply to that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for forty two pounds , and a set of the plays

of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of Goethe, the poems of Milton, the plays of Strindberg; I hardly know what I have. The books are still all in their

boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside.

I have no room for any more books, and even if I read from now until the Last Judgement, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me.

Please send no more books, send no more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.

Yours faithfully, SIMON WALKER 66. Simon Walker wrote the letter to ________

The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple‘s products sounds cool and has become a fad(一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter ―i‖ – and many other brands are following suit. The BBC‘s iPlayer – which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet –adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear – popular in the US and UK – that plays music and video is called ―iTeddy‖. A slimmed-down version of London‘s Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name ―i‖.

In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.

Most ―i‖ products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent‘s ―i‖, it‘s no surprise that they‘ve selected this fashionable name.

But it‘s hard to see what‘s so special about the letter ―i‖. Why not use ―a‖, ―b‖, or ―c‖ instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King‘s College, London, ―i‖ works because its meaning has become When Apple uses ―i‖, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. ―Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn‘t have one clear definition,‖ he said.

―However, thanks to Apple, the term is now linked with portability.‖ added Thorne.

Clearly the letter ―i‖ also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.

Along with ―Google‖ and ―blog‖, readers of BBC Magazines voted ―i‖ as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.

But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with ―2000‖ in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared. 71. People use iPlayer to ________. A. listen to music B. make a call C. watch TV programs onlineD. read newspapers 72. We can infer that the Independent‘s ―i‖ is aimed at ________. A. young readers

B. old readers C. fashionable women

D. engineers

73. The underlined word ―ambiguous‖ means ―________‖. A. popular B. uncertainC. definiteD. unique

74. Nowadays, the ―i‖ term often reminds people of the products which are ________. A. portableB. environmentally friendlyC. advanced

D. recyclable

75. The writer suggests that ________.

A. ―i‖ products are often of high quality B. iTeddy is a live bear

C. the letter ―b‖ replaces the letter ―i‖ to name the products D. the popularity of ―i‖ products may not last long

I was puzzled! Why was this old woman making such a fuss about old woods which was of no use to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting(抗议) about a projected by-pass(支路)to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasn‘t as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled—I was curious.

The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that drove her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods.

―I‘ve always loved this place,‖ she said, ―it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it ?Lovers lane‘. It‘s not much of a lane, and it doesn‘t go anywhere important, but that‘s why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves. ‖ she added.

It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels watched from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman‘s strange ideas.

―Take this tree,‖ she said pausing after a short while. ―To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here.‖ She gently touched the bark, ―Look here, under this branch, what can you see?‖

―It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife.‖ I said after an inspection. ―Yes, that‘s what it is!‖ she said softly.

She went on, ―He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horse's hoof, and I helped him to carve them. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit.‖

Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. ―His mother showed me the telegram. ?Sergeant R Holmes …Killed in action in the invasion of France.‘…‖

―?I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married‘ she said, ―He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies‘- she was like that! ‖

―Two years later she too was dead. ?Pneumonia (肺炎), following a chill on the chest‘ was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us.‖

There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. ―And now they want to take our tree away from me.‖ Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. ―I was young and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn‘t always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forward to.‖

She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. ―There were others, of course, but no one can match my Robin!‖ she said strongly. ―And now I have nothing - except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I did. Yes, I would tell him!‖

I turned away, sick at heart. 76. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
