三、阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A both their knowledge and experience are eiched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account(考虑) the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade.

Besides, it is rather ueal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils

to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects(方面) of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate(评估), and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to reach this goal.

36. By “held back” (Para. 1) the author means “________”.

A. made to remain in the same classes B. forced to study in the lower classes

______.

A. personal qualities and social skills B. total personality

A. Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with others.

B. Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.

C. Group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers.

D. Pupils also learn how to take part in teaching activities.

39. The author’ s purpose in writing this passage is to _______.

A. argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same class

B. recommend pair work and group work for classroom activities

C. offer advice on the proper use of the library

D. emphasize(强调) the importance of proper formal classroom teaching

When asked to point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put friends ahead of homes, jobs, clothes and cars.

A true friendship carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better friends you are, the more probably you’ll have disagreements. And the result can be what you don’t want-an end to the relationship.

The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended. First, don’t let your pride get in your way. Most of us can forgive each other when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize when you’re wrong – even if you’ve been wronged. Over the course of a takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friend’s point of view. And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part

During the 19th century scientists found that when certain parts of the brain of man were injured, he would lose the power to do something. And so people thought that each part of the brain did a different job. But modern research has found out that this is not so, for it is not easy to say exactly what each part of the brain does.

In the past fifty years, there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain. Chemists and biologists have discovered that the way the brain works was not so simple as people in general may think. Chemists tell us that, 1, 000, 000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember EVERYTHING that happens to us. We may not be able to recall the things we’ve heard and seen, but they are all kept there in the storehouse of the mind.

Earlier scientists thought that the power of one’s brain got weaker and weaker as one grow older. But it is now thought that it is not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise, it keeps its power. It has been made sure that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young man who has done some physical work without using much of his brain. The more work we give our brains, the more work they’re able to do.

44. Now the scientists have found that __________.

A. a certain part of a man’s brain does a job

B. if a man’s brain is injured, he can’t do anything

C. it’s difficult to conclude what each part of a man’s brain does

D. the brain is more powerful than any other parts of a man’s body

A. a man’s brain can store all the things in the world

B. no one can recall everything he has heard and seen

C. not everyone can recall all the things he has heard and seen

D. anybody has a house of the mind

46. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The older a man grows, the stronger his brain gets.

B. The younger a man is, the more quickly his brain works.

C. The more active his brain is, the more quickly his brain works.

D. The more work a man does, the more quickly his brain works.

Life is difficult.

It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult. Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “his reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

47. From the passage, it can be inferred that __________.

A. everybody has problems

B. we become stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life

C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain

D. people like to complain about their problems

48. The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to __________.

C. the writer likes to complain about his problems

D. most people complain about how hard their lives are

50. The underlined saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct” suggests that __________.

第二部分:阅读理解(共15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分)

A

United Nations (UN) officials warn that many animals important to agriculture are disappearing forever. The UN Environment Program and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released (发布) a report with the new findings. The findings are based on information collected in 170 nations during the past ten years. FAO officials say the world has lost about 1,000 kinds of farm animals because of human’s development in the past century. The officials say many other animals are still in danger. They warn that one-third of them are at the risk of disappearing.

About two billion people depend at least partly on farm animals to earn money. That is around one third of the world population. FAO officials are concerned about farmers producing enough to feed the world’s growing population. They warn that meat, milk and egg production will need to be increased by more than two times during the next twenty years.

FAO officials have gathered information about more than 4,000 kinds of bird and animal populations. 740 of those animals no longer exist. More than 1,300 other animals are said to be endangered or at the high risk of extinction(灭绝). Many of them are very important farm animals. For example, in Madagascar, Renitelo cattle have almost disappeared. In the Philippines, the Banaba chicken is now rare.

The report warns that more than 2,000 other animals could disappear within the next twenty years unless action is taken. It says that the greatest threat (威胁) is the export of animals from industrial countries to developing ones. This can lead to replacement of some native animals. As a matter of fact, animals from industrial nations often are considered more productive in developing countries. However, these animals are best for the environment of the areas they come from. They may have a difficult time surviving under extreme conditions. The FAO says having different kinds of animals is a way to protect against loss of animals from bad weather conditions or the spread of diseases. The UN agency is starting a five-year project to help countries better understand the issue.

36. What can we learn from the FAO’s findings?

A. Human activities have a great influence on animals.

B. About 1,000 farm animals are out of control now.

C. 170 nations should be responsible for extinct animals.

D. Agriculture can’t develop well because many animals are in danger.

37. What will happen if animals continue disappearing?

A. More and more people will starve.

B. Some people will lack economic resources.

C. Farm animals will be people’s enemies.

D. A large population will lose their jobs.

38. What does the export of animals bring about?

A. Exported animals provide productive foods.

B. Exported animals create chances for industry.

C. Exported animals die from bad conditions.

D. Exported animals might leave no space for native ones.

39. The text is written mainly ___________.

A. to let people know how to raise native animals

B. to call on people to protect exported animals

C. to discover the reasons why animals disappear

D. to show people the seriousness of animal extinction

B

Besides containing attractive flowers, trees and other plants that beautify the community, eco-friendly rain gardens are healthy for the environment and the people living and working nearby.

A rain garden is not very different from a traditional garden. It is just a far more eco-friendly garden. Usually it is built lower than the ground. Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply.

Thus, a rain garden keeps the water, allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden, rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused. The water will soak slowly into the ground within a day or two. This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed. This is a simple, attractive, and eco-friendly “green” way to treat storm water.

What’s more, planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment. Without using expensive machinery and chemicals, rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%.

Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate, soil, and water conditions. They may attract local wildlife such as native birds. Water your rain garden immediately after planting and once a week, unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week. Once the native plants establish the necessary root system, it will require little care.

Often, local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in public parks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems. However, you don’t need to be a professional environmental engineer to create a rain garden. As long as you’re eco-conscious homeowners, you can help the environment by building smaller rain gardens in your yards.

40. Which of the following is the eco-friendly function of rain gardens discussed in Paragraph 4?

A. They can keep the rain and storm water.

B. They can help reduce the pollution problem.

C. They can be healthy for the people around.

D. They can make the environment more beautiful.

41. One of the main reasons why native plants are recommended is that ______.

A. they cost less and are much easier to get

B. they may attract local wildlife to come

C. they require little care from the local gardeners

D. they are more used to the local growing conditions.

42. We can infer from the passage that after native plants are planted, rain gardens ______.

A. need little water

B. need little care

C. need to be watered every day

D. needn’t be watered if there is at least an inch of rainwater per week

C

If at some point you decide the interview is not going well, do not let your discouragement show. You have nothing to lose by continuing a show of confidence, and you many have much to Some interviewers may bring up salary early in the interview.

We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects(方面) of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them

the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills.

Over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friend’s point of view. And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion: Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture(培养).
