One of the latest trend(趋势) in American Childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, for example, has got increasing numbers of request for Chinese au pairs from aero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that’s true all across the country.

“I thought it would be useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age” Joseph Stocke, the managing director of s company, says of his 2-year old son. “I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future,” After only six months of being cared by 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says.

Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12.”

Experts have put forward detailed plans for a tunnel to connect Taiwan with the Chinese mainland.

The shortest proposed route would be 126 kilometers more than twice the length of the English Channel Tunnel. And the longest proposed route would be 207 kilometers.

A recent conference in Xiamen, Fujian Province brought together more than 70 experts. The event was co-sponsored (共同赞助) by universities from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

Fujian is the province where both proposed routes would begin. There is direct passenger access between the mainland and Taiwan by air and sea at the moment. Experts say that it is better to start research sooner rather than later, although there is a lack of government funding(资金). There are no technical problems to build a Taiwan tunnel. But it will require an improved political relationship across the Straits(海峡).

A professor of Tsinghua University said, "A special feature of huge projects is that the period of preparation is longer than the period of construction."

For example, he said, the English Channel Tunnel took 14 years of planning and had been discussed for two centuries. And preparations for the huge Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River began in the 1950s.

The Xiamen conference focused on the longest southern route, which would pass Jinmen and Penghu.

The first stage of the new project could be a bridge to cross the five kilometers between Xiamen and Jinmen. This would mean that travelling from Xiamen to Jinmen by car would only take five minutes.

The longest tunnel now being planned anywhere in the world is the 54-kilometer land tunnel to link Lyon in France with Turin in Italy. The tunnel will not be completed until 2015-2020.

1. Which is the longest tunnel in the world at present?

A. The tunnel between Lyon and Turin. B. The English Channel Tunnel.

C. The Taiwan Straits tunnel. D. The passage doesn't mention it.

2. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Universities both at home and abroad have sponsored (赞助) the plan.

B. If the project is completed, the world's longest tunnel will appear.

C. You can reach Taiwan from the mainland directly at present.

D. The starting point of the proposed tunnel is in Fujian.

3. The example of English Channel Tunnel shows _______.

A. it's not easy to complete a huge project

B. there are many problems to be solved before doing something

C. discussions among countries usually take a lot of time

D. the preparation takes longer time than the construction

4. What is the major difficulty in carrying out the plan?

A. Improving the relationship between Taiwan and the mainland.

B. The lack of money for the project from the government.

C. The detailed plans for the tunnel.

D. The technical problems with the tunnel.

Sydney—A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his father at

a beach in Sydney on February 23.It was the third shark attack along the coast of

Australia's largest city in a month.

The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water off Avalon, on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months.

"The father heard a scream and turned to see his son trashing (扭动) about in the water," police said."Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to shore by his father.

Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller: "It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water." He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to shore."There was a lot of pain, as you can imagine".The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.

Police said the bites" cut through to the bone" , but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures (骨折).He was in a stable condition now.

Several beaches were closed after the attack.Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy."I don't even know if he saw it," Miller said.

Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's world-famous Bondi beach.

Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the man-eater made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws—are protected in Australian waters.

【小题1】The report mainly tells us _______.

A.shark attacks on humans are on the rise

B.sharks attacked humans three times in one month

In the kitchen of my mother’s houses there has always been a wooden stand(木架)with a small notepad(记事本)and a hole for a pencil.

I’m looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I am

recommending to my mother. Over forty years since my earliest memories of the

kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later, the current paper and pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can’t be the same pencil? The pad is more modern, but the wooden stand is definitely the original one.

“I’m just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these year.” I say to her, walking back into the living-room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. “You still use a pencil. Can’t you afford a pen?”

My mother replies a little sharply. “It works perfectly well. I’ve always kept the stand in the kitchen. I never knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in these days.”

Capecchi's mother gave birth to Bonelli in 1939, when her son was learning to walk. Lucy Ramberg, who was in prison for much of the war, handed over the baby girl to friends living in Austria, where Bonelli still lives.

Bonelli recognized Capecchi's name after he won the Nobel Prize in October and informed the media in Austria that the famous scientist was her brother. The newspaper Dolomiten sent Capecchi photos of Bonelli. “Looking at the pictures, it was obviously my sister,” Capecchi said, noting she was very like his mother.

With the help of an interpreter, they reunited at a hotel. “She doesn't speak English and I don't speak German, and neither of us speaks Italian, although I can get away with it in a restaurant,” Capecchi said.

The reunion was another dramatic(戏剧性的)turn in Capecchi's life story. Capecchi was separated from his mother during World War Ⅱ. The two were reunited at the end of the war, when he was 9, and they moved to the United States. As a child in America, Capecchi started on what became a brilliant academic career.

Dear Jane,

Thank you for your letter and the photo of your family. Now I am writing to tell you why I am the only child in my family.

As you know, the population of China is growing very fast. In order to control the rapid increase of population, in the 1980s the government of China began to put into practice the family programme---- one child for each couple. As a result, most families have only one child. The child in the family can get mor e love from the family and chances to get better education. On the other hand, the only child is selfish, and not so independent. Sometimes they feel lonely. I think, every the only child like me should learn to make more friends.

Hope that we write more often.

Best wishes!

Dear Paul,

I'm in trouble now. I'm writing to tell you my problem which has troubled me for a long time. It is the relationship between my mother and me. My mother is a university professor, who works very hard. She is strict with me, but she is so busy with her work that she finds little time to talk to me. I love her and I do well in my studies, but I still feel a little afraid of her because she loses her temper easily. I don't know how to communicate with her. Maybe it's because we have seldom sat down and exchanged our feelings and thoughts. I hope we can know more about each other and understand each other better. I do hope we'll be closer. what can I do ?

Yours sincerely,

Zhang Hua
