阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑

A

During my first day at senior high school, I met my new teacher. She looked at me and said, “I am happy to have an international student in my class.” I was very excited.

One day, I came to the class about three minutes late, and she told me to write my name on a piece of paper and, beside it, the word “late”. In that way she could know I was late for the first time. At first, I was embarrassed and angry. Then I did not complain because she taught me an important lesson: time is very valuable.

I learned another important lesson during one of my classes — the day of the first exam. After I finished my exam, I did not review my answers because it was the end of the exam time. One week later, she returned my exam paper. I found that one of my answers was wrong. Even though the only choices were A, B and C, I chose D instead of C. I tried to explain my mistake to her, “I marked D though I knew C was the right answer.” However, she refused my request and told me, “I do believe you, but I am not going to forgive your mistake. This will encourage you to be more careful before you turn your papers in.” I was not expecting that from her, but she was completely right.

21. The teacher told the writer to write his name to .

A. force him to work hard B. test his writing style

C. make him angryD. tell him the importance of time

22. Why did the writer choose D instead of C?

A. D was the right answer. C. It was just an accident. B. The exam time was short. D. He didn’t know the right answer.

23. The writer thought the teacher’s attitude to his request was .

A. rude B. bad C. unexpected D. wrong

24. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To praise his teacher very highly. B. To show how strict his teacher was. C. To tell us to be careful in exams. D. To tell his experience of studying abroad.

B

Success in life depends to a great extent on what we mean by success . To some people money is the only real indication (象征) of achievement in the modern world . Their evaluation of success is based on the state of their bank balance and the power that goes with it. Their life is devoted to making money and they are at a loss to understand people whose ideas are different from their own . These are people , however , who consider their lives successful if they are doing what they enjoy doing though it may not bring them any great financial (财政) reward . A man who spends his time gardening might consider himself successful if the flowers blossomed and his trees gave fruits . Nursing , teaching , running a Youth Club all bring their own kind of success to those interested in them . Success can be found in painting a picture nobody will ever see , sailing a boat , watching the stars , collecting stamps—almost anything that involve personal efforts . The great thing is to believe that success is not necessarily public .

25.Success in life is based on .

A.personal gain B.personal effort C.the truth of success D.personal idea of success

26.Painting a picture nobody will ever see may mean .

A.that it is a failure . B.that the painter can make no money . C.a success to the painterD.that it is worthless .

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.

The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women's with age."We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age," said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

"Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men," said Goldspink. "This is part of the ageing process. " What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman's heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one's.

"This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men," said Goldspink.

They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease.

The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart, said

A lot of people think Scotland is a part of England , but, as any Scotsman will tell you , it certainly is not. In fact, until the eighteenth century Scotland was an independent country, with a parliament of its own. The English had tried many times over many centuries to bring Scotland under their rule. They succeeded at last in 1707, and some Scots have never forgiven them.

Scotland is now governed from London, but in some ways it is still a separate nation. It has its own capital city(Edinburgh),its own law, and its own stamps, it even has a language of its own, spoken now by only a few people in the islands.

In some ways Southern Scotland is like England, with his good farmland and low green hills. Central and Northern (the Highlands) have high mountains and deep valleys, fast rivers and cold lakes. These days, of course, there are good roads and railways all through Scotland. Aberdeen, the northeast city where the oil from the North Sea comes to land, is especially easy to reach. But it can still be quite different to travel in the winter when the hills are covered with snow. It always takes a long time to visit the beautiful but far-off islands on the west coast. One reason why Scotland has stayed so different

Once upon a time there lived an old man in a nice cottage with a large garden. The old man was seen his flowers all the time. They were so well-tended that every passer-by could not butfor a glance.

One day a young man went by the garden. He gazed at the splendid garden, in admiration at the beauty of these sceneries. Then, suddenly he the old gardener was blind.ed, “Why are you busy tending these flowers every day which you can’t in fact?” The old man smiled and answered that “ I can tell you reasons. First I was awhen I was young, and I really like this job. Second, although I can’t see these flowers, yet I can ,I can smell sweetness of them. As to the last one, that’s . “Me? But you don’t know me,” responded the young man “Yeah, it’s that I don’t know you. But I know everyone knows flowers and would neverthem down. I know the beauty of my garden will get many people into a good . In the meantime, it also a chance to me to have a word with you here and to enjoy the happiness these flowers have brought us.”

The old man’s them as a link of minds so as to make enjoy the sunshine in spring. Isn’t it one kind of happiness?

I arrived at my mother’s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt(被子)after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.

“Oh?” Mom said, “That’s Mama’s quilt.”

I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together; irregular

“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn’t look like any of the quilts she had made.

“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is what I’ve done so far.”

I looked at it more closely. She had made a crooked line straight. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched(缝) a piece of cloth with these words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn’t get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”

“Ooh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. Zxxk

It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother’s quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we wear quite out off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital.

However, I soon discovered that one big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it became of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by

bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever you tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens(十几岁)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

In the future your automobile(汽车) will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!

For each prediction that has come true today, several others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology, or if people really needed it in their lives or not. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past. Robot Helpers

Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other manufacturing environments.

Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.
