Sandy: Hey, Nate, how’s it going? Nathan: Not bad, not bad. You? Sandy: Fantastic!
Nathan: Haha, that sounds pretty 1)emphatic. What’s got you all jumping for joy?
Sandy: Just this day. Have you seen the weather? Have you been outside? It’s glorious!
Nathan: ①No argument there. It’s nice to see the sun again.
Sandy: I know. I swear, I was starting to become vitamin D
  2)deficient.
Nathan: Didn’t you go away at all over the winter?
Sandy: Not once! We had a lot of overseas contracts at work this year, ②but I didn’t get tapped for any of them.
Nathan: Wow, that 3)sucks. I thought you had 4)seniority, though. Why are you being left out?
Sandy: That’s the problem―I’m too senior to be sent away for a 5)measly work order, but I’m not senior enough to be the one making the deals. I need to either move up or down if I want to travel.
  Nathan: I’d suggest moving up.
Sandy: ③You’re telling me. And to add insult to injury, because we had so many contracts, I couldn’t even get up to the hill. I worked overtime almost every weekend.
Nathan: No holiday AND no snowboarding? Jeeze Sandy, how come you didn’t die of boredom?
Sandy: I’m not even kidding, I almost did. It was one of the
  Smart Sentences

  dullest winters I’ve ever had.
Nathan: ④That’s saying a lot. I usually can’t stand winter for just that reason.
  Sandy: What reason?
Nathan: It’s just so boring. I mean, it’s too cold to spend any amount of time outside, businesses close earlier, people go away for the holidays…there’s nothing to do and no one around.
Sandy: I see what you’re saying. It’s not totally bad most years, though. Are you a skier or a snowboarder?
Nathan: None of the above. I don’t even know how to skate.
Sandy: Ouch, okay, that does kind of suck.
Nathan: ⑤In a way, it’s a great catch up time, but that gets old quick.
  Sandy: Catch up time?
Nathan: Yeah, you know, little things you keep meaning to do but never seem to 6)get around to. Movies to watch, cupboards to clean out, photos to organize―that sort of thing.
Sandy: True, but you run out of that stuff eventually.
Nathan: My point exactly. ⑥I’ve run dry recently so I’ve just been 7)twiddling my thumbs at home, waiting for the weather to take a turn for the better.
Sandy: Well, looks like today’s your day!
Nathan: Haha, so it would seem. Hey, do you have lunch plans yet?
  Sandy: Nope, not yet.
Nathan: Wanna meet up? We can just 8)grab a bite to eat from the grocery store and meet in the park.
  Sandy: That sounds great! Noon?
  Nathan: Sure. See you there!
