Isobel: Well...if you’re serious, what about being an 2)auxiliary nurse? There’s a training college in York. I know I could get you on to a course. It may be something of a rough awakening. Are you ready for that? I mean, have you ever made your own bed, for example? Or 3)scrubbed a floor?
Sybil: Go on, what else would I need?
Isobel: Well, if you’re serious, what about cooking? Why don’t you ask 4)Mrs. Patmore if she could give you one or two basic tips? When you get to York, it might be useful to know a little more than nothing.

Violet (Cora’s Mother-in-law): No. And in case you hadn’t noticed, she hasn’t been there for some time.
Cora: You know what I mean.
Violet: Well, no, not really. You can’t pretend it’s not respectable, when every day we’re treated to pictures of queens and princesses in Red Cross uniform, 7)ladling soup down the throat of some unfortunate.
Cora: But Sybil won’t be ladling soup. She’ll have to witness unimaginable horrors, when she’s an innocent.
Isobel: Her innocence will protect her.
Violet: For once, I agree with Cousin Isobel. Sybil must be allowed to do her bit, like everyone else.

Sybil: And I only need the basics. How to boil an egg, how to make tea.
Mrs. Patmore: Don’t you know how to make tea?
Sybil: Not really. (Maids are giggling.) You’re right, it is a joke. But when I start my course, I don’t want to be a joke. Will you help me?
Daisy (maid): ’Course we will, won’t we?
Mrs. Patmore: If you say so. Let’s get started. Do you know how to fill a kettle?
Sybil: Everyone knows that.
(Sybil turns the faucet and water spatters all over.) Mrs. Patmore: Not everyone, apparently.
(Mr. Carson, the butler, is in the kitchen.)
Carson: Did I see Lady Sybil in the kitchen yesterday?
Mrs. Patmore: She wants to learn some cooking.
Daisy: She says she’s going to train to be a nurse, so she needs to know how to cook and clean and everything.
Carson: Has she told Her Ladyship about this?
Daisy: It’s supposed to be a surprise.
Mrs. Hugues (housekeeper): Mr. Carson, it speaks well of Lady Sybil that she wants to help the wounded. Let’s not give her away.
(Mr. Carson and Cora watch Sybil from the kitchen window.)
Mrs. Patmore: Now, steady. Even the most experienced cook can burn themself if they’re not careful.
Sybil: Do you think it’s ready?

Mr. Carson: It seems she’s made a cake for Your Ladyship, as a surprise. But I’m uneasy with surprises at the best of times and I wonder if the whole exercise is entirely appropriate. No, I’m not comfortable with this, My Lady. Not comfortable at all.
Cora: I was worried about Lady Sybil, but I’m not worried any more.
Mr. Carson: So you don’t mind, My Lady?
Cora: No. I do not mind. And I’m very grateful to you. And, Carson, the cake will be a surprise whether you approve or not. So please don’t give me away.
帕特莫尔夫人：我敢肯定。拿出来吧，别烤焦了。

(Branson, the chauffeur, sees Sybil in the hospital.)
Branson: Is it what you thought it would be?
Sybil: No. No, it’s more 8)savage and more cruel than I could have imagined but...I feel useful for the first time in my life. And that must be a good thing.
Branson: So you wouldn’t go back...to your life before the war?
Sybil: No. No, I could never go back to that again.
(The war is over and Downton Abbey returns to its pre-war setting.)
Sybil: Doesn’t it feel odd to have the rooms back?
Edith (Sybil’s sister): And only us to sit in them. I suppose we’ll get used to it.
Sybil: I don’t want to get used to it.
Edith: What do you mean?
Sybil: I know what it is to work now. To have a full day. To be tired in a good way. I don’t want to start dress fittings or paying calls, or standing behind the guns.
Edith: But how does one escape all that?
Sybil: I think I’ve found a way to escape.

Edith: Nothing too drastic, I hope.
Sybil: It is drastic. There’s no going back once I’ve done it. But that’s what I want. No going back.
Edith: I don’t want to go back, either.
Sybil: Then don’t. You’re far nicer than you were before the war, you know.

Sybil: The war is really over and it’s time to move forward.
Branson: Do you mean you’ve made your decision?
Sybil: Yes. My answer is...that I’m ready to travel and you’re my ticket. To get away from this house, away from this life.
Branson: Me?

Sybil: In a day or two. Mama is well again and I see no reason to delay. Although, I do so wish we could have parted friends.
Robert: What about you? Do you want to part friends?
Branson: I do. Although I don’t expect to.
Robert: All right. Well, if I can’t stop you, I see no profit in a quarrel. You’ll have a very different life from the one you might have lived, but if you’re sure it’s what you want.
Sybil: I am.
Robert: Then you may take my blessing with you, whatever that means.
Sybil: Oh, Papa! It means more than anything! More than anything!
Robert: If you mistreat her, I will personally have you torn to pieces by wild dogs.
Branson: I’d expect no less.
Sybil: Will you come over for the wedding?
Robert: We’ll see. We’ll talk about that later. And there’ll be some money. But not much.
(Violet watches from the distance.)
Violet: So, you’ve given in?
Robert: She would have gone anyway. Of course, you’ll think that’s soft.
Violet: Not at all. The 11)aristocracy has not survived by its 12)intransigence.
